Once again, the Division for Learning Disabilities hosted the annual fall conference, Bridging the Gap between Research and Practice. The goal for the conference is to provide evidence-based workshops on
effective instructional and assessment practices for teachers, administrators, psychologists, and others who are involved in delivering services to students with disabilities. To accomplish this goal, DLD routinely invites highly qualified and widely known scholars and trainers to make presentations lasting three hours to small groups of participants.
For the 2007 meeting, DLD met 1 and 2 November at the historic Sheraton Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. Attendees were treated to opportunities to work intensively with presenters such as Rollanda O'Connor, Charles Hughes, Margo Mastropieri, Steve Graham, and a host of others. Those who attended submitted great comments about the quality of the sessions:
- About Judy Engelhard's session on early reading: "I plan on implementing this with my younger students. They will do well and enjoy it."
- About Shannon Gormley Budin's session on linguistically informed reading instruction: "Great ideas/knowledge to use in class."
- About Linda Mason's session on writing to persuade: "Excellent. Very clear, concise, and well delivered."
- About David Scanlon's session on the ORDER routine: "This is something I can use in my classroom tomorrow."
- About Paul Riccomini and Kimberly Bright's presentation on math errors: "Gave me good insight and ideas to apply with my students."
- About Yvonne Bui's session on writing for state-wide assessments: "Very good! I am motivated to teach and use these materials w/ 2 of my classes Monday."
